Representantes de 10 países da América do Sul se reúnem hoje (30/05), em Brasília, após convite do presidente Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. O início da reunião da cúpula regional aconteceu no Palácio do Itamaraty, em Brasília. Pela manhã, os convidados foram recebidos pelo presidente Lula e proferiram discursos. Na parte da tarde, estão previstas conversas mais informais com cada um dos presidentes, outros representantes dos governos e seus respectivos assessores. Para o encerramento do encontro regional, está previsto um jantar no Palácio da Alvorada.

Na abertura do encontro, o presidente Lula sugeriu dez temas diferentes para discussão ao longo do dia, incluindo uma moeda comum, economia, regulação, atualização da cooperação, meio ambiente, saúde, energia, educação e defesa. Além disso, houve forte menção à retomada da integração entre os países. Como primeiro encaminhamento, Lula sugeriu a criação de um grupo formado por representantes de cada país, que seria responsável por apresentar propostas para a integração da América do Sul dentro de 120 dias a partir desse encontro. Participaram da reunião os presidentes da Argentina, Bolívia, Chile, Colômbia, Equador, Guiana, Paraguai, Suriname, Uruguai e Venezuela.
